Thibault Flichy: It’s important for Total to be at an event like Movin’On for obvious reasons: today, fossil energies represent 90% of the energies used in transportation. We cannot deeply change the mobility sector without the actors of the energy sector and in particular Total.

Pierre Clasquin: The world of mobility and electric mobility in particular is an ecosystem. Not one organization holds all the answers. Even an actor such as Total is just one piece of the puzzle. If we are going to change things and keep pace with this transition, all the pieces of this big puzzle have to come together: public authorities, regulations, public policies, car manufacturers working on batteries, new equipment. That’s why moments like these are so important, they are opportunities for us to work together and share our thoughts on today’s challenges.

[What challenges are there for mobility today?]

Thibault Flichy: Mobility has a big impact on the planet, and the challenges continue to evolve as the world population grows.

Pierre Clasquin: At Total, we estimate that by 2040 there will be twice as many cars in the world than there is today. That means more than 2.2 billion cars. This is not a sustainable equation for energy transition.

Thibault Flichy: And it will be the cause of many problems. Security problems, 1.3 million people die in road crashes every year, this is unacceptable. Health problems, especially because of city mobility: 70% of people live in cities today. And it’s a problem for the climate, as we know, 25% of CO₂ emissions come from transportation.

[How can Total contribute to a more sustainable mobility?]

Pierre Clasquin: Total, whose ambition is to become the responsible energy major, is in a good position to respond to these new needs, for energies whose carbon intensity is shrinking and that are therefore cleaner, including electric power.

Thibault Flichy: There are three key ways in which Total can contribute to a more sustainable mobility. First of all, with its energy mix, by providing new types of energy, such as electricity and gas. Secondly, by improving energy efficiency. Our research and development teams already play a key role in this area, in particular with the work they do on fuels and lubricants. Thirdly, by taking part in the behavioral changes that are needed. For example, by providing fleet managers with applications that help them consume less.
