Moho Nord, which came on stream in March 2017, is a deep offshore oil project situated 75 kilometers off the Congolese coast. It is the largest oil project ever undertaken in the Republic of the Congo and showcases TotalEnergies’ deep offshore operating expertise.
A two-in-one project
The Moho-Bilondo offshore block, which covers an area of 320 km² in water depths ranging from 750 to 1,200 meters, includes the Moho-Bilondo and Moho Nord fields, and comprises four reservoirs. Two of the block’s reservoirs started producing oil back in 2008 using the Alima floating production unit (FPU).
In 2013, we launched Moho Nord, a two-in-one project:
- Moho Phase 1 bis, with the aim of upgrading and connecting the Alima FPU to 11 new wells. The redevelopment was finalized in 2015 and enabled us to increase production by 40,000 barrels per day.
- Moho Nord, involving the creation of a new production hub to the north of the Moho-Bilondo field. It comprises 17 wells connected to the Likouf FPU and 17 other surface wellheads, supported by a tension-leg platform (TLP).
Together, Moho Phase 1 is and Moho Nord produce 140,000 barrels of oil per day, representing more than half of the country’s total oil production.
Maximum safety and minimum environmental impact
As with all our projects, safety and respect for the environment were key priorities for Moho Nord, right from the start. Our driving force throughout the project was optimizing energy efficiency at the facilities. Zero routine flaring, the recovery of waste heat and the reinjection of all produced water (water produced during oil and gas processing) are just some of the technologies enabling us to minimize our impact on the environment. The first ever all-electric FPU, Likouf was designed to have the smallest environmental footprint possible. Its all-electric system provides the power necessary for operation while minimizing the amount of gas combustion required.
To meet our zero-accident target, we have worked together with our partners to implement a safety program. Therefore, we have appointed our own “Safety Champions” to ensure that teams stay safe throughout the project.
