Pillar 3: The Wetlands

Main objective:

Conserving and restoring wetlands and riparian vegetation.

Why are we taking action?

The Murchison Falls Albert Delta Ramsar site and the fringe wetlands of Lake Albert are of social and cultural importance to the people of the area. They are also important spawning grounds for a variety of indigenous fish species, and over 450 known species of birds.

What are our practical actions?

Helping build more resilient wetland ecosystems for biodiversity and local people by promoting their sustainable use and restoring degraded areas.

  • supporting the Ministry of Water and the Environment with the management of wetlands, in order to preserve their ecological and socio-economic value;
  • promoting the establishment of community-based wetland user groups and the rollout of sustainable wetland use initiatives;
  • catchment-wide freshwater quality mapping and monitoring. Identification and contribution to restoration of degraded wetland areas.

By 2045 the program aims to:

  • maintain the quality and extent of wetland habitats inside the Murchison Falls Protected Area;
  • improve the quality and extent of fringe wetlands along the Lake Albert through preservation and restoration;
  • improve freshwater quality along the shorelines of the Nile and Lake Albert.
