Ras Laffan 2, a condensate refinery in which Total has a 10% interest, was inaugurated by the Emir of Qatar in a ceremony attended by Bernard Pinatel, President, Refining & Chemicals, on February 20. We revisit a project that reflects R&C’s strong engagement in the region.
Located in northern Qatar, near Ras Laffan 1 — in which Total also has a 10% interest — Ras Laffan 2 refines the large quantities of condensate that Qatar produces with its natural gas. The new plant doubles the condensate processing capacity of the Ras Laffan site — built and operated by Qatargas — to nearly 300,000 barrels a day. The resulting petroleum products are sold in both the domestic and export markets. Diesel from Ras Laffan 2 meets the most stringent specifications; most of the jet fuel will supply the airport in Doha and the naphtha will be exported to Asian markets as a petrochemical feedstock.
“Qatar is a strategic country for Refining & Chemicals because of its access to feedstock, especially from the North Field gas deposit; the fast-growing demand for petroleum products and petrochemicals in the Middle East; and the unique ability to move between European and Asian markets,” explains Jean-Jacques Mosconi, Senior Vice President, Refining & Petrochemicals Orient. “Total has a very good reputation there, which has been further strengthened by our participation in Ras Laffan 2.”
The project consolidates Total’s long-standing partnership with Qatar, where it is present across the oil and gas value chain, from exploration and production to LNG, refining and petrochemicals.
