Biogas, a renewable gas, is produced by the breakdown of organic waste. Injected into gas networks in the form of biomethane, it contributes to the decarbonization of natural gas uses. How is biogas produced? What are its uses?

Biogas: production process and end uses
- First, we collect organic matter: livestock manure and agricultural residues, waste from the agri-food industry, biowaste generated in urban areas.
- These organic matters go through an anaerobic digestion process: by fermentation at around 42 degrees for around 40 days in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas.
- The biogas is either purified into biomethane, which offers identical characteristics to natural gas, and injected into the gas network as a complement to natural gas, either transported to a combined heat and power plant, where it is burned to produce both electricity and heat.
- Methanization also products digestate: an organic fertilizer for more sustainable agriculture.
Biomethane can then be used:
- as a complement to natural gas in industrial processes;
- as a complement to natural gas for domestic use;
- to produce bioGNC or bioGNL, alternative fuels for low-carbon mobility.
When it leaves cogeneration units, biogas is used to produce renewable electricity and heat.
