LPG, an Energy with Many Advantages
07/04/2024
TotalEnergies plans to double the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cleaner cooking in Africa and Asia. What is LPG and and what are its benefits for the environment and people?
LPG, an Energy with Many Advantages
This infographic presents the various advantages of LPG for cooking.
LPG is easy to produce, store, and transport
Produced as a result of processing natural gas and refining crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a product that does not deteriorate over time. Production of this type of fuel is on the rise thanks to the relatively low investment costs associated with it.
LPG is packaged in metal bottles that are easy to store and transport.
LPG is more efficient for cooking
Cooking efficiency: for 1 kilogram of LPG, it takes 5 kilograms of coal or 11 kilograms of wood.
Energy content: 46 megajoules per kilogram for LPG, 28 megajoules per kilogram for coal and 16 megajoules per kilogram for wood.
Covering power of the flame (stove): 60% for LPG, 20% for coal and 15% for wood.
Using LPG reduces carbon emissions
By reducing the burning of firewood, LPG helps reduce deforestation, with a projected saving of 0.7 gigatons of CO2 equivalent by 2030 (compared to the burning of firewood from non-sustainable forestry), according to the International Energy Agency (2023).
When burned, LPG emits 4 to 5 times less carbon than coal, and 10 times less carbon than firewood.
LPG is better for the user’s health, as it emits 150 times less carbon monoxide compared to burning wood or coal, and zero noxious fumes.
LPG also offers a way to fight gender inequality
In developing countries, using LPG frees up valuable time for women and children who had traditionally been occupied with gathering firewood for cooking.
