TotalEnergies Accelerates in Plastics Recycling
03/08/2022
From the doubling of capacity at our Synova plant to our partnership with Honeywell to develop advanced recycling, not to mention multiple projects with Plastic Energy, TotalEnergies made several announcements regarding plastic recyling from October 2021 to February 2022. Check out the infographic for a quick overview.

Our ambition: produce 30% recycled and renewable polymers by 2030
Demand for recycled plastics is growing by 10% a year
TotalEnergies is investing in two recycling technologies:
- Mechanical recycling: a mature technology that requires high-purity materials from pre-and post-consumer waste.
- Advanced recycling: a technology able to handle waste that cannot be mechanically recycled and that is generally incinerated or landfilled
TotalEnergies is contributing with its partners to the development of advanced recycling via pyrolysis
Advances recycling plant: Plastic waste (to) Pyrolysis unit (to) Pyrolysis oil (to) steam cracking in petrochemicals plant (to) polymerization unit (to) polymers in Polymers plant.
Plastic Energy and Honeywell, our first reference partners in advanced recycling
- TotalEnergies is currently developing three advanced recycling projects with Plastic Energy, including the development of a plant at the Grandpuits zero-crude complex in France.
- TotalEnergies and Honeywell announces a strategic agreement to promote the development of advanced plastic recycling.
A look bac at five months of announcements:
- October 1, 2021: TotalEnergies doubles its recycled polypropylene production capacity for sustainable applications (auto-mobile manufacturing, construction, etc.) at its Synova site.
France / Mechanical recycling / Production capacity nearly 45,000 tons per year - October 26, 2021: Partnership with Plastic Energy and Freepoint Ecosystems to develop advanced recycling of plastics in the United States to produce high value-added polymers, notably for use in food-grade packaging.
United States / Advanced recycling / Processing capacity: 33,000 tons per year - December 8, 2021: Strategic partnership with Plastic Omnium to develop new types of recycled polypropylene that meet the automotive industry’s exacting standards using materials from industrial and domestic waste streams.
France / Mechanical recycling - January 11, 2022: A new partnership with Plastic Energy will allow TotalEnergies to develop its advanced recycling operations in Europe to produce plastics, notably for use in food-grade packaging.
Spain / Advanced recycling / Processing capacity: 33,000 tons/year - February 17, 2022: TotalEnergies is pursuing its development in advanced recycling by partnering a Honeywell project in Andalusia to produce plastics, notably for use in food-grade packaging and high-value-added applications.
Spain / Advances recycling / 30,000 tons/year
