The Roads to Carbon Neutral - Episode 2

New Mobilities: Steering Change

The Roads to Carbon Neutral

The third season of The Roads to Carbon Neutral program, in partnership with CNBC Catalyst, shares an inspiring and optimistic view of TotalEnergies’ role in our sustainable future globally through powerful, human-led and on-the-ground stories.

Throughout the series' eight episodes, discover the solutions and innovations making the transition to low-carbon energy a reality and helping us achieve a carbon-neutral future.

In this second episode, let's travel to the Southwest of France. Emmanuel Leroy invites us to learn more about his daily life as regional manager of one of our multi-energy service stations.

Emmanuel:
I've been cycling ever since I was very young, and I'm still very passionate about cycling
I love to ride my bike through the countryside even today
I know we'll face environmental challenges in the coming years.
Our vehicles contribute enormously to climate change
So we have an important role in supporting our customers by using less carbon-intensive fuels today and the fuels of tomorrow.

I manage multiple energy stations in the most beautiful part of France, the Southwest
I move around a lot, so from one station to another
The roads are getting increasingly congested, so it's important and urgent to work on reducing vehicle emissions.
There are increasing numbers of electric vehicles in France, Europe, and the world.
Therefore, we must make the necessary investments to accompany our customers in this change toward new energies.

Christelle:
When you're in the station, you can have a coffee, check your email, and have a lunch. So we’ve created a shared space.
As soon as they finish, heir vehicle is recharged and they can leave.
We show them how easy this transition can be to their way of life.

Emmanuel:
Every day we explain to our customers how easy it is to switch to these new energies and their benefits.

This is what we explain during recharging. By accompanying our customers with “red jackets”, for example, a device we put in place for periods of high activity, we accompany our customers in the process and in explaining how the electric terminals work.

We're also blessed with sunlight, so our solar panels help power our charging stations and the café area.

A few years ago, stations like this only had one charging point. Today, we have areas with up to 20 charging stations currently in use.

Vehicles are different, and each one has its requirements. For instance, a truck cannot run on electric power today because of its size and the weight of the batteries that would be required. So we are looking for other alternative transition energies, such as hydrogen or CNG.
CNG or Bio CNG is a compressed natural gas. It is composed of methane. It burns, in a way that emits less than diesel or petrol.

Hello, Monsieur. Your vehicle is equipped with CNG; what can you tell me? What are the advantages?

Customer:
The main advantage is that it wears out the engine much less.
And on top of that, it's much cheaper to maintain.

Emmanuel:
We're helping our customers to follow us in this adventure.
Every day, our customers are choosing less carbon-based energy. As a result, the number of electric vehicles has been increasing steadily. This is just the beginning for TotalEnergies, and I am very proud to be part of this adventure.

Assisting our Customers in their Transition to Electric Mobility and Low-carbon Fuels

Accounting for 19% of the world’s energy related CO2 emissions, road transportation is by far the highest emitting form of mobility. Decarbonizing mobility represents a major challenge.

That’s why we offer solutions for our customers that are designed to spur the adoption of electric mobility and sell fuels that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as natural gas vehicle fuel or biofuels. We also promote growth in low carbon hydrogen as a mobility solution, particularly for trucks.

The roads are getting increasingly congested, so it's important and urgent to work on reducing vehicle emissions. There are increasing numbers of electric vehicles in France, Europe, and the world. Therefore, we must make the necessary investments to accompany our customers in this change toward new energies.
